Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri in 1835. After stints as a printer, river-boat pilot and unsuccessful gold-miner, he took up writing under the pen-name Mark Twain. His masterpieces include Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and he is justly acclaimed for his satire and artful iconoclasm.
